    Best thing I did for my 70 Eliminator with a 315C was to follow the last video. I had my original brass 24” radiator re cored with another 4 row, then bought the fan, fan clutch and shroud from WCCC. It is a freshly rebuilt 351C and runs cool even in 100 degree heat! I will be starting on rebuilding my 70 XR-7 Convertible soon and will do that same thing again! I have never had a 351C run so cool!

    Ack! So, so, so much ignorance and wrong information being shown in this video! As a well-known Pantera guy, I’m slapping my forehead. First off, the thermostats are all being shown installed upside down. That will never work. You say you had to go through a number of engines before you found a correct thermostat. No, not true. The one you claimed was correct WAS correct, but configured differently from a standard Cleveland thermostat. It is a Robertshaw high flow unit. At least one of the ones you claimed was wrong, for a Windsor, was in fact a proper Cleveland unit. The only difference between Windsor and a Cleveland thermostats is the ‘hat’ pressed onto the end of the Cleveland, which partially (but not fully) restricts the water flow through the block. You failed to notice that. Consider other Ford V8 engines. They all have a 5/16” bypass hose on the thermostat housing that allows water to circulate inside the engine (only) when the thermostat is closed. As the engine heats up the thermostat opens and water flows forward to the radiator. However, some waster continues to instead flow through the bypass hose, bypassing the radiator. This is by design. With the 351C, Ford engineers (who are WAY smarter than I am, and deserve our respect) brought the bypass architecture into the engine. Rather than an external hose, they designed a bypass orifice inside the block. When the thermostat is closed, all the water passes through the brass ring that you removed and replaced. When the thermostat opens (and isn’t installed upside down!) the hat pressed onto the end of the thermostat is lowered into the brass ring, mostly blocking it off. If you calculate the area of the ring that is not blocked off, it is almost exactly the same as the area of the bypass hose on a Windsor. Like I said, these guys were no dummies. Once the bypass orifice is blocked off by the open thermostat, water is now routed to the radiator. If you replace the bypass ring with the solid one (with the pinhole), it eliminates water flow through the engine when it is cold and the thermostat is closed. The water pump just churns away, the water is all but stationary inside the engine (which can lead to hot spots, and steam pockets which can cause blown head gaskets). When the thermostat finally opens, cold water from the radiator then shocks the engine, and the thermostat closes again. The cycle repeats a few times until the thermostat remains open. In fact, if a block off plate like yours is installed, the optimum solution is to then not run a thermostat at all, or at least drill a bunch of holes in the thermostat to allow water flow past it until it opens. At the end of the day though, the very best solution is to keep the stock Ford bypass plate, and install a proper, standard 351 Cleveland thermostat. That lets the engine warm up properly when cold, and blends hot water circulating inside the engine with cold or cooler water coming from the radiator to allow a gentle transition as the engine heats up. This video is so full of misinformation, it should really be taken down. Do some homework (don’t just take my word for it), learn how the system works, and reshoot the video (with the camera turned to landscape orientation please!). There is much to be gained by sharing good information, but much danger from well-intentioned people spreading gross misinformation like this….

    • @576103
      @576103 5 дней назад

      It’s also worth noting that TMeyer sells a replacement plate with a smaller opening. The idea is that a conventional Windsor thermostat will be able to block off that opening and the engine will still work as designed. It’s really a half-assed solution that lets people get away with not using a proper Cleveland thermostat. It probably works okay, but it potentially wrecks the car for the future owner who might not be aware the cooling system has been modified. If that future owner then attempts to run a standard 351C thermostat, it will be physically blocked and won’t fully open which could compromise cooling.

Yes I left it out in the sun to soften up prior. If I set to wear there won't be any air pockets in those said curves. The carpet is too short side to side ajd the sill will not cover it. Mostly what a load a crap. The only right part is that Clevelands overheat because people put Windsor thermostats in. Use a 170deg Cleveland thermostat and the car will not overheat. BTW, I've played with Clevelands for over 40 yrs. I currently race a 600hp one in circuit racing, and seeing as Panteras were mentioned, I also own one. ALL my cars, past and present, road or race, run cool with the correct Cleveland style thermostats and the normal bypass plate. It is not a restrictor plate. Overheating I have experienced has never been caused by using the original thermostat and bypass plate system. Go read (because it's to much explaining here) why Ford developed this system by reading a factory manual. Oh and many new cars nowadays use exactly the same bypass plate system and block off thermostat. There's your proof, it works.
